About
Mealtrition is a free allergy awareness resource for restaurant servers, written from the guest’s side of the table.
Why I Created This Resource
For nearly 20 years, I have lived with a peanut and tree nut allergy. Throughout my life, I have experienced food allergies from the perspective of the person sitting at the table: communicating my allergy to restaurants, trusting others with my safety, and navigating situations with friends, family, and strangers.
Over time, I began paying close attention to how allergy situations were handled: what made me feel safe, what created unnecessary concern, and what information helped build trust between guests and restaurant staff.
This website was created to help bridge that gap. My goal is to provide clear, practical allergy awareness education that helps servers better understand their role in creating safe and respectful dining experiences.
The information here is built from personal experience, careful research, and established food allergy safety practices. It is designed to give servers the knowledge and confidence to handle allergy conversations with honesty, care, and respect.
How Guests Need to Be Treated
People with food allergies already worry about every meal. They do not need a server deciding for them, guessing about ingredients, or making jokes that put more fear in their head. They need someone who will gather information as accurately as possible and present it clearly so they can decide whether they feel safe, want to take a chance with possible contact, or leave.
I have heard servers say things like “haha, don’t want to have to call 911 now, do we?” more times than I can count. That kind of comment is completely inappropriate and disrespectful in any context. An allergy is something someone lives with every second of their life. Your job is to lessen that worry as much as you can, not add more doubt.
Who It’s For
Servers and hosts who take or relay allergy orders. Anyone who wants a short, practical refresher on how to talk to guests with allergies and how to handle the order without making the situation worse.
What You’ll Find Here
Five short lessons, a Quick Guide, and a quiz. The focus is treating the guest well: ask carefully, get accurate answers from the kitchen, explain the facts without drama, leave the decision with them, and never use language that makes them worry more.
What It Isn’t
- Not medical advice, legal advice, or certified workplace training
- Not a substitute for your restaurant’s allergy procedures or local regulations
- Not permission to decide for the guest what risk they should accept
